Code: f254
Latin name: Pleuronectes platessa
Source material: Fish muscle
Family: Pleuronectidae
Specific IgE antibodies are reported in several studies.
Allergen Exposure
Cooked, fried or otherwise prepared in various fish dishes.
Potential Cross-Reactivity
Species within groups of fish, like Gadiformes (examples: codfish and hake) and Scombroid fish (examples: mackerel and tuna) seem to share allergenic components. The overlap of allergen specificity between the groups seems to be moderate or even small.
Clinical Experience
Specific IgE antibodies have been measured in atopic dermatitis patients (1, 2), and in food-allergic children (3) using Pharmacia CAP System. The clinical sensitivity and specificity of f254 Plaice was reported to be 86% and 94% respectively (4).
Review
A salt water flat fish with white flesh, Plaice is commercially fished on both sides of the Atlantic. Its length is rarely over 60 cm, although before it was heavily fished, it could be over one meter. Species within groups of fish, like Gadiformes (examples: codfish and hake) and Scombroid fishes (examples: mackerel and tuna) seem to share allergenic components. The overlap of allergen specificity between the groups seems to be moderate or even small. Specific IgE antibodies have been measured in atopic dermatitis patients (1, 2), and in food-allergic children (3) using Pharmacia CAP System. The clinical sensitivity and specificity of f254 Plaice was reported to be 86% and 94% respectively (4).
